Our B Team were out in Bree this evening for their 3rd last game of the league campaign. In what was a must win game for our boys if they were to keep their title hopes alive.
The game started nervy for our boys with the nerves probably getting the better of them for the opening 20 minutes. It was a good ball from the Bree number 7 that found their centre half free in our box to tap home the first goal of the game. It took a few minutes for us to get control but after that we start knocking the door to the Bree defence and with that came a sublime pass from Patrick Somers to find Steven Ryan who duly finished home. 1-1, 20 minutes gone. There was always going to be goals here but who scored more was the question to be answered.
For the remainder of the game there was to and fro with both teams creating chances but neither could finish them. Bree had the better of the football in the first half, but the neutral could see it was anyone’s game.1-1 as we entered the break.
A small tactical change for us as we entered the second half seeing us have much more of the ball, winning the ball higher up the pitch and creating much more of the chances. It was one of those chances we created which ended up with the ball breaking outside the Bree box where we won a free and Joe’s hotdogs was about to open. Joe Roberts stepped up and put in a wonderful strike just clipping the upright and into the back of the net it went. We took the lead and looked in control now. Bree were getting some half chances especially from set pieces where they always looked dangerous with Noel Roche and Billy Dunne putting in some great balls. However, Paul Nolan must have a magnet in his head because almost every ball that came in he cleared it, someone said it “wasn’t a magnet and just the size of his head”, saying that Thomas Firzgerald never was really threatened as our back line and midfielders worked to win the ball back. Another good bit of pressure seeing the ball won back and Patrick Somers winning the ball back again and put Steven Ryan through who duly rounded the keeper and slotted home for a 3-1 lead with 6 minutes left on the clock.
That lead didn’t last long as the Bree Sub managed to pick the ball up and we couldn’t keep him out despite Gary Cowmans best effort. The boys just settled again defended well and for what seemed like 20 minutes of added time saw the game out.
The win means that there is 2 points between us in 3rd and Bree in first, Bree still have to play second placed New Ross as do we so all is to play for along with our lads being in the Semi final of the Billy Browne cup.
